Electrical service panel and main breaker for an EV charging circuit upgrade

Creating the Capacity a Charger Circuit Requires

100A to 200A service upgradesLoad calculation provided in writingUsually a single-day changeover

A panel upgrade is the job nobody wants to hear they need, which is exactly why it should be proven rather than asserted. Laguna Niguel EV Charger runs an NEC Article 220 load calculation first, every time, and shows you the result whichever way it falls. Sometimes the honest answer is that your existing 100-amp service will carry a properly derated charger and no upgrade is warranted, and we would rather tell you that and install the smaller job. When the calculation genuinely does come up short, upgrading service from 100 amps to 200 amps is the work that makes everything else possible, and it tends to solve problems the homeowner had stopped noticing. Older Laguna Niguel homes frequently carry a panel that was adequate for the appliances of its era and is now supporting central air, a heat pump, an induction range, and a workshop. Adding a 48-amp continuous load to that is where a real risk sits. The upgrade replaces the main panel and often the service entrance conductors and meter socket, requires coordination with the utility for a disconnect and reconnect, and is inspected by the city before power is restored.

Scope of work

What a Panel Upgrade Covers

Panel work is the most involved service we offer and the one where scope creep is most tempting. Everything below is quoted as one flat number before any work begins.

  • A complete NEC Article 220 load calculation documenting existing demand and the proposed charger circuit, provided to you in writing whether or not it supports the upgrade recommendation.

  • A new 200-amp main panel with adequate breaker spaces for present needs and future ones, rather than the minimum board that leaves you full again in two years.

  • Replacement of service entrance conductors and the meter socket where the existing ones are undersized for 200-amp service, which on original-service homes is usually the case.

  • Utility coordination for the disconnect and reconnect, scheduled by us and arranged around your day so the outage window is known in advance rather than discovered on the morning.

  • A new main breaker, main bonding jumper, and neutral-to-ground separation corrected to current code, since older panels frequently carry bonding arrangements no longer permitted.

  • Grounding electrode system brought to current requirements, including ground rods and bonding to the water service where present, which is one of the most common correction items inspectors write.

  • Transfer of every existing branch circuit onto the new panel, with each circuit identified, tested, and legibly labeled on a printed directory rather than handwritten guesses.

  • Replacement of any obsolete or recalled equipment discovered during the change, including known-hazardous panel types, discussed and priced with you before it is carried out.

  • The dedicated EV charger circuit installed as part of the same project, sized for continuous duty, so the charger and the upgrade are inspected together as one permitted job.

  • Permit filed with the City of Laguna Niguel, inspection attended by us, correction items cleared at our cost, and the closed permit forwarded to you for your records and for any incentive claim.

How it works

How a Panel Upgrade Runs

The calculation and the quote

Call (949) 687-3907 and send a photo of the open panel and the meter. That plus your appliance list is usually enough to determine whether the upgrade is genuinely necessary. If we are recommending it, you will receive the load calculation showing why, along with a flat price that covers utility coordination, permit, and inspection.

Scheduling around the utility

Panel upgrades require the utility to disconnect and reconnect service, and that appointment sets the date rather than our calendar. We file the permit, book the utility window, and give you the outage duration in advance so you can plan around it. Most residential upgrades are a single-day job with power restored the same evening.

Changeover and inspection

On the day, the service is dropped, the old panel is removed, the new equipment is set, and every branch circuit is transferred, tested, and labeled. The inspector attends before permanent reconnection, and we meet them. You get the closed permit, the directory, the load calculation, and the invoice as one package.

Why us

Why This Upgrade Should Be Proven First

We show you the calculation before we recommend anything

A panel upgrade is a significant expense and it is the easiest thing in this trade to sell unnecessarily. You get the arithmetic, in writing, and if it shows your existing service will carry a derated charger, that is what we will tell you and that is the job we will quote.

We size the new panel for the next decade

If the service is coming out anyway, the incremental cost of adequate breaker spaces and proper capacity is trivial compared with revisiting it later. A heat pump, a second charger, or a future solar tie-in should not require another upgrade.

Utility coordination is our problem, not yours

The disconnect and reconnect appointment is the part of this job most likely to go sideways, and chasing it is a genuinely tedious task. We book it, we confirm it, and we tell you the outage window before the day rather than during it.
